"St. Augustine (Aurelius Augustinus) was born in 354 A.D. at Thagaste in Numidia. His father was a pagan; his mother Monnica, as appears in these Confessions, was a devout Christian, and had a definite and lasting influence on her son. Augustine studied ant taught rhetoric at Thagaste, then taught at the University of Carthage, at Rome, and at Milan. While at Carthage he embraced the doctrine of the Manichaeans; but under the later influence of Bishop Ambrose in Milan, and after a long emotional and intellectual struggle, he was received into the Christian Church in 387. He then returned to Africa as a priest; and in 395 became Bishop of Hippo, a post he retained until his death in 430...." Note, The Confessions Of Saint Augustine
