About This Item

London: Secker and Warburg, 1955. First U.K. Edition. First impression. Octavo (20cm). Green cloth hardcover; dustjacket; 408pp. A fine copy in the original pictorial dustwrapper, unclipped (priced 18s. net at base of front flap), slight fading to red lettering on spine panel but still a very bright, unworn copy, Near Fine.

Mann's final novel, still unfinished at the time of its posthumous publication; it is both a parody of Goethe and of the underworld autobiographies of Georges Manolescu. Published the same year in America by Knopf; the translator being an American we presume the American edition to have priority.
