In Shrewsbury in 1142, the worst of winter arrives early bringing with it a heavy snowfall. Thus the saftey of the guest-hall roof comes into jeopardy and the brothers are called upon to effect repairs -- despite the weather--before the damage grows. But the icy and treacherous conditions are to prove near fatal for Brother Haluin. His deathbed confession is heard by Brother Cadfael and The Abbot only. And a wicked story it is, of trespasses hard for God or man to forgive. But Haluin doesn't die and when he recovers he determines to make a journey of expiation, with Cadfael as his sole companion.
