Original Condolence Letter from Jeanie Oliver Smith wife of Horace Edwin Smith to Mr. Charles S. Bishop Cambridge, MA. "Johnstown NY Nov 19th 1901 My dear Mr. Bishop It is with very sad hearts that Mr Smith and myself read the contents of your letter. Mr Smith says: "It was not un-expected to me, but it came with a shock just the same." It will be doubly hard for you, for you were always in such close association with your Father.It is only the other day that I found a pamphlet on the Labor Problem, written by your Father, and I had laid it aside to read to Mr Smith as his sight is so poo now. His generall health is somewhat improved.With the deepest sympathy in your sorrow, Believe meYours most sincerelyJeanie Oliver Smith." The condolence letter was sent to Charles Bishop son of Joel Prentiss Bishop. Charles was a real estate lawyer in Cambridge Ma. His father, Joel Prentiss Bishop (March 10, 1814 – November 4, 1901) was an American lawyer and legal treatise writer referred to by more than one commentator as "the foremost law writer of the age."-American Law Review.Jeanie was married to Horace Smith. Jeanie Oliver was the daughter of Richard Davidson, of New York, and Margaret Oliver (Amos) Davidson. Jeanie Oliver (Davidson) Smith was born at Troy, New York; is a contributor to British and American periodicals and author of several works of poetry and fiction; is a member of the Society of American Authors and the Aldine Literary Society of Johnstown. She is the mother of two daughters: Agnes Temple (Mrs. Charles Sidney Robbins), of Johnstown, New York, and Margaret Elizabeth (Mrs. William Logan Kennedy). Wonderful piece of genealogy. 2 pages 8 x 5 inches, in orignal envelope.
