CONCERTS SPIRITUEL - Bound Volume of 20+ Sheet Music Pieces and 2 Handwritten Scores

This is an antique French songbook containing 20+ bound pieces of sheet music associated with the "CONCERTS SPIRITUEL" of the 19th century. Nicely bound in half leather with marbled covers and end papers, and gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. French and Latin text. The "Concert Spirituel" was one of the first public concert series in existence, beginning in Paris in 1725 and ending in 1790. The performances were revived during the Napoleonic Era (particularly after 1805) under the name "Concerts Spirituel." This collection of songs is presumably for Concerts Spirituel performances held at the "Seminaire de Nancy" (Seminary of Nancy) in France. Circa 1840's / 1850's - the songbook is undated, but one blank page at the back has "Ave Maria (Cherubini)" written at the top...the composer Luigi Cherubini first published "Ave Maria" around 1850. At the back of the book are 32 pages of lined paper - the first two of these pages have musical scores beautifully handwritten in ink.

Condition:
Clean covers. There is a tiny area at the bottom of the back cover where the top paper layer has peeled away. The top 2 cover corners are worn. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Occasional foxing to the pages, otherwise clean. Overall the songbook is in Very Good- condition.
