LEMERY and TOURNEFORT, Divided into Three Classes, VEGETABLE, ANIMAL, and MINERAL; with their use in PHYSIC, CHEMISTRY, PHARMACY and several other ARTS. Illustrated with above Four Hundred COPPER CUTS, curiously done from the Life; and an Explanation of their different NAMES, PLACES, of GROWTH, and COUNTRIES where they are produced; with the Methods of distinguishing the Genuine and Perfect, from the Adulterated, Sophisticated, and Decayed; together with their VIRTUES. A work of very great use and curiosity. Done into English from the ORIGINALS. The FOURTH EDITION 1748, carefully corrected, with large ADDITIONS, in Two Parts, Part Two begins with a caption title: 'Pomet's general history of drugs: with what is farther observ'd by Lemery, Tournefort, and others on the same subjects. 4to, approximately 260 x 195 mm, 10¼ x 7½ inches, 86 full page copper engraved plates showing 400 images (a few plates misplaced, but all present), pages: xx, 1-220; 1-202 followed by 10 pages of index and an advert, collation: A4, a4-b, B-Ee4, Ff ; B-Dd4, Ee. Bound in half morocco, marbled covers, gilt lettered title label, gilt flowers and date on spine between raised bands, new cream endpapers. Pale browning to edges of title page, pale brown offset from all plates onto facing text, pale browning and foxing to most plates and some text pages, mostly to margins, small repair to 1 top edge, not near text, tiny hole to 1 page affecting 1 word, small repair to margin of 1 plate not touching image, otherwise a good tight solid copy but affected by browning. Plates show silk-making, bee-keeping, sugar mill, fisheries, Unicorns, whales, stringing and rolling tobacco, fruits, gums, animals, herbs, trees, roots, seeds, etc., See; Catalogue of Printed Books in the Wellcome Medical Library, Volume 4, page 412; Rachel Hunt, Catalogue of Botanical Books, Volume 2, page 45, No. 428; Short Title Catalogue of Eighteenth Century Printed books in the National Library of Medicine, page 358; ESTC T31045.
