Gorsline; who has provided modern and period B&W artwork (12 plates & 40 in-text images in photo-gravure) illustrating this handsome volume; Introduction by poet James Lowell; xlii + 316 pages. Heritage Club Sandglass, No, 2M, (4pp.) laid in. Black paper over cardboard slipcase. Weight: 3 lbs. Izaak Walton (c. 1593 - 1683) was an English writer who is best known for The Compleat Angler. He also wrote a number of short biographies collected as Walton's Lives. The Compleat Angler was first published in 1653, but Walton continued to add to it for a quarter of a century causing it to expand from 13 to 21 chapters, and to be published in five editions during Walton's lifetime. <br /> <br /> The additional chapters on fly-fishing in the river Dove were added by Walton's close friend Charles Cotton (1630 - 1687), an English poet, translator of Montaigne, and writer. <br /> <br /> Douglas W. Gorsline 1913-1985) was an American painter, illustrator, and writer. His line-engravings for 12 plates and 40 washes were used in The Complete Angler published by the Limited Editions Club. That edition served as the basis for this Heritage Press edition.<br /> <br /> THE COMPLETE ANGLER is considered a classic celebration of the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse.<br /> <br /> Condition: Fine Cloth: tight, very bright & clean with crisp B&W illustrations. Solid slipcase with light wear to corners and at the righthand mid-edge of the opening. No previous owner or remainder marks. Sandglass pamphlet laid in.
