CONTEMPORARY MANUSCRIPT NOTES ON END PAPERS
4to. [1 (blank)], [1 (illustration)], [2 (title leaf)], [31], [1 (blank)], 276, 305-583, [1 (blank)]pp. (complete thus) with an illustration on the verso of first leaf, type ornament border on title page, contemporary sprinkled sheep, spine panelled by raised bands and with later maroon morocco title labels, edges of boards sometime neatly refurbished, later endpapers probably inserted at the same time, a few contemporary notes, 2 preliminary leaves and 2 terminal blank leaves (the original endpapers) with extensive contemporary manuscript equine recepies and remedies (on the preliminary ones) and on potential problems with London trained grooms (on the terminal ones). A nice copy and a rare survival in its original binding.
WING D859 ESTC r1378 locates a surprisingly small number of copies - B.L., Cambridge, Oxford, Leeds and Shakespeare Birthday Trust only in UK, and 10 only in North America. This classic seventeenth century work on horses first published in 1639 and reprinted 1651 and 1656. It was again printed in 1684.
The equestrian frontispiece portrait carries at its foot the imprint "sold by Tho. Hind at the black bull in Cornhill". The rider is often incorrectly wrongly identified as Charles I but it depicts in fact Ralph, Lord Hopton, a Royalist Commander in the Civil War.
