La traducción Española de esta obra fundamental sobre Chile; First Spanish edition of a fundamental 18th century work on Chili by a Chilean. 1788-95. Madrid. Antonio de Sancha. Two volumes in 8vo (208 mm x 142 mm). xx + 418 + 1 [blank]; xvi + 382 + 1 ff. + 1 [blank] + 8 plates & maps. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands forming compartments, two morocco labels lettered in gilt, most attractive bindings in very good condition, only slightly rubbed. A fine copy, with only a few scattered foxing spots and mainly marginal worm holes to several leaves in second volume, occasionally touching headlines, heavier on places but overall clean and fresh. First Spanish edition -first printed in Italian during the author´s exile. According to Sabin, the Spanish translation is more complete than the original Italian, with several notes from the translator to the second part. The work deals with the country´s history, costumes, natural history and natives. Illustrated with three folding maps of Chili –two regional and the other including the Coast and handsomely decorated with a cartouche-, a frontispiece with the portrait of the author, three folding tables showing the state of Chili and one folding plan of the parks and fortresses in the border of Arauco. Molina (1740 – 1829) was a Chilean historian, naturalist and Jesuit Priest –entering the Order at 15. The fact that he was born in Chili makes him arguably one of the first Chilean historians born in Chili; after the 1767 expulsion of the Jesuits, he exiled to Bologna, from where his works where published; the later years of his life where his most productive, having being father of a progressive evolutionary theory which gained him an investigation from the Church. Molina, known for his linguistic skills, included a Chilean vocabulary at the end. Palau, 174563. Sabin, 49889.

Description:
[Paris]: Jacques Guerin, 1739. Quarto. (9 5/8 x 7 13/16 inches). 18pp. Contemporary paper-backed boards. The very rare first edition of Bellin's extensive account of the "Ocean Meridional." The work includes lengthy separate analyses of the coasts of Africa and of South America as recorded on the map. In addition to geographic locations, observations made in the regions by various explorers are cited. The cartographer Bellin was employed for more than five decades in the French Hydrographic Service, where he served as the first "Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine." Commissioned to develop new surveys of the coasts of France and then the known coasts of the world, these were published, respectively, as Le Neptune Français in 1735 and the Hydrographie Français between 1756 and 1765. Bellin also published a Petit Atlas Maritime with 580 charts and plans of harbors, issued in five volumes in 1764. The present work was later published as one of thirty reprinted pamphlets in the author's Recueil des… Read More

First Edition of the French Translation of the third volume of Müller's Nachrichten von Seereisen... (Sammlung Russiche Geschichte (1758)), an invaluable reference source for the history of Russian discovery and exploration in north-east Asia and along the north-west coast of America. It is the best contemporary account of Bering's first and second expeditions to Bering Strait and the western limits of North America, during which he discovered Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Müller served as a scientific associate on Bering's second voyage, 1741-42. Müller’s work also contains the substance of crucial written reports which he found in the archives in the town of Jakutsk which established that the Bering Strait had in fact first been discovered and navigated by Semyon Dezhnyov in 1648. Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
