Author Jessie Fenton tells the fictionalized story of Lonny, a teenage boy gone bad, from his petty thievery in his hometown to his hopping a freight train and befriending a man who teaches him to pass bogus check and steal cars within hours of their meeting. Lonny ends up in reform school, becomes a hardened criminal and kills a man during a bank robbery. He dies in the electric chair at Sing Sing. We find the book has some of that classic film noir vibe. Dusty top, light wear or soil to cover and spine; some fingermarks on cover. Boards show moderate patina, wear especially to edges and corners. Prior owner's stamp on front blank, moderate foxing to title page and last few pages of ads, occasional smudge, no tears or folds. James Anthony Froude FRSE (23 April 1818 – 20 October 1894) was an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. From his upbringing amidst the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, Froude intended to become a clergyman, but doubts about the doctrines of the Anglican church, published in his scandalous 1849 novel The Nemesis of Faith, drove him to abandon his religious career. Froude turned to writing history, becoming one of the best known historians of his time for his History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada. Modern binding is superb, clean and handsome; text block is clean and only ever-so-slightly age toned, with bit of soiling to preliminary leaves; there is the occasional spot of foxing, but the majority of the text block is as bright as the day it was published. A tight and unusually attractive first edition of this early study, the first of eight volumes published under Worthen's direction, with assistance from J.D. Whitney, Leo Lesquereux and Henry Engelmann. All called for foldout maps and plans (some partly colored) are present and mainly in superb condition, with only the two largest of them showing some edgewear and bearing expert archival strengthening. Worthen was a renowned if self-taught leading geographer of his day, and served as State Geologist from 1858 to 1875. All in all an exceptional, far above average copy.
