About This Item

[Philadelphia]: Philadelphia Board of Trade, 1860. Octavo. 12pp. Printed wrappers. Some faint soiling and chipping to wrappers; vertical crease from original transmittal; very good.

Two letters addressed to U.S. Treasury Secretary Howell Cobb discussing proposed legislation for a New York City branch of the U.S. Mint. Philadelphia Mint Director James Ross Snowden wrote the letters in response to Secretary Cobb's request for input on the proposal. Snowden objected to the establishment of a new mint. He cited issues of cost, the existence of sufficient mints already, and raised concerns of the establishment of a new Assay Office. Serious proposals for a New York City mint emerged in the 1840s but remained unrealized. Scarce.
