12mo, original printed pictorial boards backed in black morocco, illustrated, with 16 lithographic plates, 64 pp. Covers rubbed and with some staining, joints and hinges cracking, top cover loose and partially detached, internally clean; otherwise very good. This is a first edition of a work which went into many editions. Keep (1827-1906) was a professor at Mills College, and the illustrator George Holbrook Baker arrived in California in 1849, and became a major lithographer in the state. Laid in advertising leaf includes four poems.
