London: G. W. Bacon & Co, 1898. Hardcover. Good. 65 two-page colour plates + 54 p. index at rear. Each plate 36 cm. Burgundy cloth hardcover with gold and black impressing. Corners worn, some rubbing to cloth. Hinges tender and text block loosening. Ink stamp of former owner on front pastedown. Some soiling and foxing, mainly to endpapers. Includes maps of central London.
George Washington Bacon (18301922) was an American mapmaker and publisher who moved to Britain after becoming bankrupt at home in 1867. In 1870, Bacon started his business, G.W. Bacon & Co. at 127 Strand, London. Around 1900, G.W. Bacon was purchased by the Scottish publishing house of W. & A.K. Johnston and incorporated into their own but maps using the Bacon name were being produced as late as 1956.
