About This Item
Spine is tight and interior is clean and unmarked. There are creases to the front and back covers, as well as some other general shelf-wear. Pages are tanned. Cover designer Alan Fletcher was known for incorporating impromptu bits of ephemera into his designs: a beach made of sandpaper, a tree with toilet-paper buds. When Penguin art director Germano Facetti began bringing in designers like Fletcher to introduce vibrant imagery to its solemn but typographically cohesive covers, the young Brit responded to Orwell's novel of nostalgia and post-industrial dread with this composition of two simple fragments ('Fishing is the opposite of war,' quips the book's narrator). John Wain writes, 'What makes Coming Up For Air so peculiarly bitter to the taste is that, in addition to calling up the twin spectres of totalitarianism and workless poverty, it also declares the impossibility of "retaining one's childhood love of such things as trees, fishes, butterflies"—because it postulates a world in which these things are simply not there any more.' 232 pp.
Synopsis
Coming Up for Air is a novel by George Orwell, published before World War II. It is the most culturally English of his novels with alarums of war mingling with images of an idyllic Thames-side Edwardian childhood. The novel is pessimistic - industrialism and capitalism have killed the best of Old England, and there are great, new external threats.
