Soft cover. 8vo, 22cm, first edition, first issue, 320, 124pp., with 14 hand-coloured plates, 149 woodcuts, advertisements, in the original blue grey illustrated printed wraps, spines chipped, else near fine (ds1). ~ Published monthly by "Punch" in 20 numbers in 19 parts, "The Comic History of England" along with "The Comic History of Rome" are believed to contain of the best of John Leech's work. The 14 hand-coloured frontispieces by Leech are vivid and bright. Gilbert Abbott Beckett was on the original staff of "Punch". "(Leech). was a true humorist, a student of human life though he observed humanity mainly in its whimsical aspects." (John Miller Gray). A very scarce collection of the first editions.
