Preface by George Saintsbury. Previous property of the University Club of Spokane, stamps on endpapers . Octavo. 372pp. CLASSIC FRENCH 19TH CENTURY LITERATURE. Honore de Balzac, 1799-1850, novelist and playwright, was one of the world's most notable writers in European literature and one of the founders of realism in European literature. His magnum opus was a series of almost 100 novels collectively called "La Comedie Humaine", which provide a portrait of all aspects of French society in the years after Napoleon's fall in 1815. He is known for his very human and realistic characters. Burgundy muslin boards w/ black leather title panel pasted on spine, with gilt lettering and scroll design, with slight wear to edges but in quite nice condition. Front corners bumped, corners and around spine ends scuffed. Lower right corner has an indentation across the corner. Top of spine has fading across the top and there is a scratch mark about a quarter of an inch long on the spine. Inner hinges cracked, backstrap partially loose, sewn binding tight and solid. Upper edge gilt. Text pages are quite clean, clear, unmarked, no tears, not fragile, lightly toned. Frontis illustration with overleaf which has red lettered quote on the recto, facing the illustration. The four other illustrations in the book are on coated paper with paper overleaf with red lettering facing the illustration. This book is in remarkable condition for a book over a hunderd years old. 372 pages. 8.25 x 6 inches. 1899, The Gebbie Publishing Co, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.
