Washington, D.C.: Published by the author [printed by A. Hoen & Co., Baltimore] 1912. 8.5" x 5.5". [4], iv, 43, [1] pp. Lacking errata slip. With color-printed front wrap bound as frontis and 53 tissue-guarded plates, each containing 27 paint swatches of named colors. Original green cloth over boards, titles stamped in gilt to spine and front cover, plain endpapers and flyleaves. Cloth worn and frayed at edges, hinges cracked, tissue guards toned, small ownership signature to front pastedown. Inscribed by author on ffep to British ornithologist William Eagle Clarke, dated Feb. 12, 1914. Building on his first systematic treatment of color nomenclature (Boston, 1886) a publication that quickly became popular among the author's fellow ornithologists and naturalists in general Ridgway's greatly expanded work also found an expanded audience, becoming a standard tool for producers of paints and chemicals, manufacturers of paints and furnishings, and florists, to name a few.
