This influential Roman Catholic prelate from Benin was named archbishop of Cotonou in 1960 and cardinal in 1984, later becoming the first non-European named Dean of the College of Cardinals in 1993, the highest-ranking African in the Roman Catholic church since its earliest years. Color PS (on verso, as was his custom), 4" X 6", n.p., n.y. Near fine. Handsome printed formal head-and-shoulders portrait in clerical garb as a young man, boldly signed in black fineline near the bottom on the verso. With original envelope cancelled at the Vatican on 21 May 1982.
