Philadelphia: J. & J.L. Gihon, n.d., ca. 1850s. Octavo (22cm.); removed; 156pp. Cloth spine remnants from larger volume from which this title was removed, title page (serving as upper cover) a bit foxed, else Very Good and internally sound. Irish novelist's most famous work, based on the 1819 murder of fifteen-year-old Irish Catholic Ellen Scanlan (née Hanley) at the hands of an assassin hired by her husband, Protestant Irishman John Scanlan. Both men were subsequently tried and executed, the case covered by Griffin as a young journalist in Limerick. The work was first published in 1829 and quickly adapted for the stage as "The Colleen Bawn" by Dion Boucicault.
