Paris: J.-L.-J.-Brière, Libraire, 1825 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Ex-Library. Rebound by library in maroon buckram, overcast sewing, xii, 406 pp. Usual library markings, heavily foxed, otherwise about very good as rebound. Jacques de Vitry (Jacobus de Vitriaco), having taken part in the fifth crusade (1218-1222), wrote the historical portions of Book I (his Historia Orientalis, sometimes called Historia Hierosolytima) based on earlier manuscripts and documents, but also included a traveller's view of the country, its people & customs based on personal observation. Guizot includes those portions of Book II which deal with the state & mores of the West, while omitting those dealing solely with specific religious orders and with theological controversy. Book III describes events that Jacques himself witnessed or was involved in, and while many editors doubt its authenticity, it matches in many particulars a letter he wrote to friends upon the taking of Damiette.
