About This Item

An eclectic, unique and serendipitous collection of nearly 50 years (generally late 1940's - early 1990's) of travel-related materials in English, French, German, Italian and Greek: guides, booklets, brochures and books, with some substantial items such as Florence by Pierre Gauthiez (Boston, The Travel Lovers Library, Hale, Cushman & Flint, no date, prob. 1927. Good -; binding intact and tight, tear near heel of spine); Muirhead's England (London, Blue Guides; Ernest Benn Ltd 1957 Very Good); Nagel's Encyclopedia Guide to Poland (Geneva, Nagel Publishers, 1974, Very Good +). In softcover: Onieva's 1957 guide to The Prado, the Verdesi 1950 guide to Rome, Bartolini & Fiumi's Florence and its Surroundings for 1950, Filippo Rossi's guide to the Museum of the Bargello from 1934. (All Good +.)

Collection includes some standard guidebooks like Guides Michelin, but mostly locally produced or specialty guides; includes some relatively scholarly or professional materials (booklets, pamphlets) concerning such things as the monumental brasses of Hereford Cathedral, roof bosses of Westminster Cathedral, memorial places in classical German literature, material on monastic and chained libraries in the Middle Ages, coronation privileges of the Cinq Ports, Romanesque Catalan art, etc. Also some communist-era Intourist brochures for Krakow, Samarkand, some German and Bulgarian guides. Generally material covers virtually every place of historical importance in Northern Italy and England as well as Luxembourg, Uzbekistan, Dubrovnik, Istanbul and the Topkapi Palace museum, the German Democratic Republic.

A unique assemblage of obscure, hard-to-find, out-of-print and one-of-a kind material.

Shipping costs will have to be discussed, as approx. 300 items are heavy.
