About This Item
Synopsis
Katherine Anne Porter born as Callie Russell Porter in Indian Creek, Texas, was the fourth of five children of Harrison Boone Porter and Alice Porter. Her family tree can be traced back to American frontiersman Daniel Boone. She was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist, essayist, short story writer, novelist, and political activist. Porter’s novel, The Collected Stories Of Katherine Anne Porter won the National Book Award in 1966. The stories are mainly set in Texas, Mexico, Greenwich Village, Berlin and the Old South. In "The Cracked Looking Glass," Rosaleen's dream and stories collide with the mundane reality of life on a remote Connecticut farm. For 9-year-old Miranda, "The Grave," is her grandfather's empty one, now just a hole in the ground. And in yet another of her centerpieces is the tale of a spell cast by a mean-spirited New Orleans house Madam and related by a maid to her new employer in "Magic.” Porter writes with honest intelligence and with prose that is captivating and elegant.
