About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1936 2022-10-16. First American Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed by Author. Inscribed/signed by T.S. Eliot on title page. 8vo., 220 pp.. ; Firm binding, bright pages, chipping/fraying to head/tail of spine and corners of boards, corners bumped, one port. plate laid onto FFEP. Lacking jacket. This book was inscribed for Miss Mary Mauson by T.S. Eliot. during his visit to Concord Massachusetts on Saturday May 31, 1947. On the following Tuesday the twenty-fifth year of "The Waste Land" he delivered the Commencement address titled "On Poetry" at Concord Academy, a secondary school for young women. He opened with "It is a time-honored custom, at every Commencement everywhere, for somebody to make a speech to the Graduating Class. My own belief is that the Graduating Class are usually just the ones who don’t listen to it.” He went on to say “The usual Commencement speaker, I imagine, is someone who has made a successful life in one definite line or another. But, if there is one thing the poet is not, he is not a successful man.”A poem is enclosed, presumably by the recipient Miss Mauson regarding her impressions on meeting T.S. Eliot. Her first line… “How unpleasant to meet Mr Eliot!”.
