This collection of works include: 'Method and Results', 'Darwiniana', 'Science and Education', 'Science and Hebrew', and 'Discourse Biological and Geological'. Written by Thomas Henry Huxley, an English biologist and anthropologist specialising in comparative anatomy. He became known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Bookplate to the front paste down of each volume, showing that this collection once belonged to Sir William Eden, 7th and 5th Baronet (1849-1915). Sir William was a British politician, former colonel and local magistrate, described as eccentric and often foul-tempered.
