About This Item

[Mexican-American War] Luis García de Arellano. Esposición al Soberano Congreso Constituyente por el c. Luis García de Arellano y documentos relativos a la misma. México: Imprenta de Lara. 1856. Yellow printed wraps. 22.5 cm. 33 pp. Has been folded. Corner bump, stains & wear to covers, interior very good.

OCLC shows five holdings, two in the U.S. (SMU & UT-Austin). This pamphlet is Arellano's communication with Congress opposing the annexation of the State of Coahuila to the State of Nuevo León, which had been negotiated by the Governor of Nuevo Leon, Santiago Viadurri. Arellano relates the opposition of the people of Coahuila to the annexation, and his communications with the representatives of that State. He relates a brief history of the Borderlands and proposes to cancel the 1854 Treaty of Mesilla (authorizing the Gadsden Purchase acquisition of land that is now the southernmost portions of New Mexico and Arizona.) In his view, when the Conservatives negotiated the initial peace Treaty, they said Nuevo México was non-negotiable, as the populated areas of the border. The residents of New México had voted to remain in México. They didn't want to be second class citizens in the United States. The population of the borderlands were real patriots, they were abandoned by the Central Government during the barbarian invasions, but they still defended México and the Conservative Government sold them as cattle. He also attaches a document "Protesta contra la Anexión de Coahuila" that includes his correspondence with the representatives of Coahuila, who are assembled in Saltillo. A very interesting look at the internal struggles in Mexico in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War and the changes it has wrought.
