About This Item
London: English Illustrated Magazine. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton. A scarce, apparently rare, serialized edition of this coaching and driving classic, apparently the true First Edition, published in the English Illustrated Magazine, (October 1887 to July 1888), of a work published in book form in London in 1888 by Macmillan, usually dubbed the First Edition, that was both complete and consecutively paginated. O.C.L.C. lists no copies of this edition published sui generis, but rather, these pages/this volume were bound together with three others in Illustrations by Hugh Thomson, most likely removed from the original English Illustrated Magazine. Bound in green buckram cloth, moderately soiled and worn, a bit discolored of joints and extremities, but sturdy, gilt lettering over black cloth at spine. Mildly soiled and moderately foxed of interior but clean and unmarked. Damp-staining to a short range of pages at upper tips, not affecting text. Perhaps the finest previous owner's self-penned book-plate I've ever seen at first free endpaper bottom. Beautifully illustrated in plentiful black-and-white engravings by Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton, the Macmillan edition having 214 of them. Imagine the roads of Britain before the arrival of the motor-car and wide use of steam train. W. [illiam] Outram Tristram "recounts" (fictionalized) experiences to be had On the Road throughout England in the nineteenth century. The York Road, The Bath Road, duels, houses, churches, stables, taverns and inns--they're all here, and written just as accessibly as fabulously. Pagination is as follows, with 10 parts some of which are dubbed "Part"s: Part I: [1], 8-26 pp.; Part II: [3], 94-109 [1]; Part III: [1], 222-244; Part IV: [1], 300-315; Part V: [1], 359-379 pp.; Part VI: [1], 423-440 pp.; Part VII: [1], 477-492 [1] pp.; Part VIII: [1], 550-563 pp.; Part IX: [1], 614-627 pp.; Part X: [1], 682-698 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
