About This Item
NY: Scholastic Inc.. Very Good; Covers scuffed and lightly scratched.. 1998. First American Edition. Softcover. 0590129996 . A scarce copy of the advance uncorrected proofs of the first American edition of Philip Pullman's Clockwork. Several pages of artwork by Leonid Gore. Pullman is best known as the author of the elegant Dark Materials series (The Golden Compass, The Amber Spyglass and The Subtle Knife) . Clockwork is a shorter work, a fairy tale blending horror, fantasy and mystery. It reminds me of the tales of the Brothers Grimm, or more modernly, of the late Angela Carter. Clockwork was shortlisted for the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year and the Carnegie Medal and received the Silver Award for the Smarties Book Prize. In 2004, Clockwork was adapted as an opera in Great Britain which toured with members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. ; Galley/Proof; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 107 pages .
