About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. The Clicking of Cuthbert ? A Hilarious Set of Stories from a True Comedic Master

From the creator of Jeeves and Blandings comes a book about golf that Wodehouse fans will find just as ecstatically hilarious and well-written as many of the illustrious British author's most prominent works. P.G. Wodehouse was an avid golf player, and in fact, wrote two books about the sport. One was entitled The Heart of a Goof, and the other is this enchanting collection of stories known as The Clicking of Cuthbert.

The book is a set of 10 delightfully droll short stories that are all told by Wodehouse's recurring character, the Oldest Member. While each story is unique in its own way, the author never fails to reintroduce not only familiar elements and types of characters, but situations that his loyal fans have encountered on numerous occasions throughout his other publications.

Wodehouse masterfully weaves his plotlines together to create the most hilarious situations, while leaving no words or expressions to chance. Even the extended focus on golf sets the stage for a series of funny comments and conversations that make this book truly delightful, and you'll find you can fully enjoy them even if you have no idea about golf whatsoever.

While some modern readers might have difficulty adjusting to Wodehouse's style, if they are not used to it, as well as to some of the more obscure terms and expressions he uses, the author always makes certain that the contexts he uses are easy to follow and remarkably intuitive at the same time. Even if you aren't necessarily used to the language or to Wodehouse's sometimes surprising choice of jokes and situational humor, basically you'll quickly get in to it.

As soon as you start to read The Clicking of Cuthbert, you may find yourself laughing out loud at the mere mention of some of the author's well-placed puns and subtle artifices.

Synopsis

From the book:This book marks an epoch in my literary career. It is written in blood. It is the outpouring of a soul as deeply seared by Fate's unkindness as the pretty on the dog-leg hole of the second nine was ever seared by my iron. It is the work of a very nearly desperate man, an eighteen-handicap man who has got to look extremely slippy if he doesn't want to find himself in the twenties again. As a writer of light fiction, I have always till now been handicapped by the fact that my disposition was cheerful, my heart intact, and my life unsoured. Handicapped, I say, because the public likes to feel that a writer of farcical stories is piquantly miserable in his private life, and that, if he turns out anything amusing, he does it simply in order to obtain relief from the almost insupportable weight of an existence which he has long since realized to be a wash-out. Well, today I am just like that. Two years ago, I admit, I was a shallow farceur. My work lacked depth. I wrote flippantly simply because I was having a thoroughly good time. Then I took up golf, and now I can smile through the tears and laugh, like Figaro, that I may not weep, and generally hold my head up and feel that I am entitled to respect.
