A CLERGYMAN'S DAUGHTER- George Orwell- Harper & Brothers-NY/London- Aug 17, 1936- 1st US Edition & Printing- Hardcover:-12mo Good+/ no dj -some cover staining and spots but nevertheless a solid copy from one of his least read but rarest books- No date, published first by Harpers in NY after the Gollancz edition in UK of 1935- 317pp, lightly toned but clean, no tears or writing-missing front ffep- original blue cloth with Harpers mark on bottom right front cover, yellow titles and design on spine- book is solid- SEE PHOTOS- On June 9, 1936, Orwell married Eileen O'Shaughnessy, and on August 17, A Clergyman's Daughter was published in New York. A Clergyman's Daughter, which was published in Britian on March 11, 1935.-"It details the trials and tribulation of Dorothy Hare, a woman whose sad existence, devoted to 'good works' is turned upside down."- His scarcest novel...some say that no more than 500 copies were ever printed. "This book has a great effect of showing how scandal can affect prominent community members. Dorothy goes "missing" after she kisses the villages most disreputable character. During her time as a missing person she learns new experiences such as sleeping in the streets and picking hops for a meagre wage. These elements are informed by Orwell's own experience with homelessness and poverty as described in Down and Out in Paris and London. Synopsis

Dorothy, the heroine of this novel, performs good works, cultivates good thoughts, and pricks her arm with a pin when a bad thought arises. She then has a series of unexpected and degrading adventures after becoming a victim of amnesia. Though she regains her life as a clergyman’s daughter, she has lost her faith.
