About This Item

New York: George Doran, 1910. Hardcover. Very Good in red cloth with some rubbing along the spine.. First book in a trilogy that also includes Hilda Lessways and These Twain. The novel is set in the fictional town of Bursley, which is based on Bennett's hometown of Hanley, in the Staffordshire Potteries in the north of England. The story follows the life of Edwin Clayhanger, the son of a prominent Burley businessman, and his struggles to find his place in the world. Throughout the novel, Bennett explores themes of ambition, class, and the conflict between tradition and modernity. Considered one of Bennett's most important works and is often regarded as a masterpiece of early 20th-century British fiction, Clayhanger is known for its detailed and realistic portrayal of the working-class culture of the Potteries, and for its vivid and sympathetic characterizations of its central figures.
