About This Item
New York, New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1906. First Edition, 2nd Printing 2nd Printing. Hardcover. VG-/No Jacket. Keller, Arthur I.. Disturbing "romance" that glorified white supremacy & served as the basis for D. W. Griffith's equally disturbing 1915 film of the same name, later retitled, "Birth of a Nation."First published in 1905, this is the 1906 printing of that First Edition, with the Second State boards now in tan cloth (ruled & lettered in green, with the cross aflame to spine under title) instead of the original red. In 374 pages with glossy frontispiece + 6 internal glossy plates intact with clean margins. Though generally very clean, condition is downgraded to Good due to staining to top edges of pages 61-65. Many former owner's names on front endpapers + clipping bearing the notice of the author's death glued to recto of frontis, which has created offsetting to opposite page. Text is clean & unmarked, pages moderately tanned, commensurate with age. Binding strong & straight, both hinges secure. Rubbing to extremities, with some fraying to both ends of spine & lower corners. No DJ (missing).
