A history of Western Civilization from the beginnings to the present, from Troy to the Gettysburg Address, from Einstein to Marx. The author ties together the histories of empires, art, philosophy, science asnd politics. He describes the Western tradition of openness and freedom in the development of that culture, recognizing that there is also brutality--for every Leonardo Da Vinci there is a Mussolini. He states that the idea of civilization is the story we tell each other to place ourselves in the world and justify our actions. And this story has become degarded the last few decades and divorced from reality. This is a thought-provoking re-examination of the past that is both challenging and inspiring--a book that might be required reading for all. xi + 532 pages with References, Further Reading and Index. 6.25 x 9.5 inches. 2006, Pegasus Books, USA.
