About This Item
New York: Hippocrene Books, 1988. Presumed first edition/first printing. Hardcover. Very good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling.. 188 p. Footnotes. Bibliography. Index. The author contends that the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Department Reorganization Act was a dangerous piece of legislation, because it created one military czar, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a single military authority and sole military advisor to the President. In this work the author explores the issue of civilian control of the military from the perspectives of World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile crisis and the Vietnam War. The book concludes with a seven-point recommendation to solve the potentially grave problems created by the act.
