Boldly signed on half title page by Harry S. Truman (aka "Give 'Em Hell Harry"). Book and Dust Jacket are in beautiful condition. Clean text. Unclipped ($3.00). Protected by Brodart book jacket cover. Truman is one of our great Presidents. In 1959 former President Truman gave a series of lectures and seminars on government at Columbia University. "The book is a transcript of what he had to tell them about the Presidency, the Constitution and demagoguery more poignant and human than Truman's official memoirs" (New York Times). President Truman had a sign on his desk, "The Buck Stops Here."Truman had been vice president for 82 days when President Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. Truman, presiding over the Senate, as usual, had just adjourned the session for the day and was preparing to have a drink in House Speaker Sam Rayburn's office when he received an urgent message to go immediately to the White House, where Eleanor Roosevelt told him that her husband had died after a massive cerebral… Read More

Modern binding: black cloth spine with gilt-tooled spine title; flax paper dyed brown with aniline dye over acid-free boards. "April 12, 1808. Printed by order of the Senate." Includes communications by B.H. Latrobe and Robert Fulton on the subject of canals. Howes, G27. Albert Gallatin was Secretary of the Treasury from 1801 to 1813. He advocated an ambitious program to improve the nation's transportation infrastructure for which he was unable to muster enough support at the federal level. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire… Read More
