About This Item

[African American Civil War Military] Special Order Number 118. Dated December 3rd, 1863. Handwritten and signed on headquarters letterhead of the Draft Rendezvous, Long Island, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. Measures approximately 9.5" x 7.5". This document assigns Sergeant Kern of the 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry to the Colored Detachment, and orders him to report immediately to his commanding officer Lieutenant J.M. Deane. This unspecified Colored Detachment was one of the nascent black units that were being mustered in 1863 following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The 29th Mass was a notable unit, taking heavy losses in the Petersburg Campaign including the assault On Fort Stedman, which was the last serious attempt by Confederate troops to break the Siege of Petersburg. The Order is signed by Lt. William Augustus Hill, 19th Mass. This came from the estate of Lieut. John Milton Deane, the commanding officer who Sgt. Kern was assigned to, and who was also a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his role in the Assault on Fort Stedman. Minor edge wear but in very good condition overall.
