About This Item

8 Catherine St., Strand, London.: Tinsley Brothers, 1875. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo (12.5 X 18.5cm). A very good copy of the first edition of 1875; pp. xvi, 328. Contemporary half dark green polished calf binding with red marbled boards, matching marbled end papers and marbled edges. Burgundy spine labels to the spine. Binding good and strong with a little general wear and some rubbing, very slightly chipped to the head of the spine. Contents good and tight, a little foxing to first and last few pages otherwise unmarked, contemporary owner's signature to the head of the title page. A very good first edition copy. The introduction starts 'There are probably few persons who do not number among the most pleasant recollections of their youth their first visit to a circus whether their earliest sniff of the saw-dust was inhaled in the building made classical by Ducrow, or under the canvas canopy of Samwell or Clarke. In my boyish days, the cry of This way for the riders! bawled from the stentorian vocal organs of the proprietor or ring-master of a travelling circus, never failed to attract all the boys, and no small proportion of the men and women, to the part of the fair from which it proceeded.' [Bibliographic note: the first edition, as this copy, was published in 1875 and not 1876 as sometimes suggested.].
