About This Item

London England: Constable, 1997. Paperback. Churchill and Hitler. In Victory and Defeat. Very slight shelf wear to edge of cover. No two men were more unalike than Churchil and Hitler. Churchill was honourable, warm-hearted, emotional, witty, overflowing with life and all its pleasures. Hitler was ignoble, cold-hearted, caluclating, vindictive and narrow. Yet both led their nations in war. For Churchill war was a great romantic adventure, but au fond he was a man of peace. For Hitler war was a natural state of things; he made war for war's sake. Churchill saved his country. Hitler brought his to total ruin. Churchill was, of course, world-famous before anyone had heard of Hitler. Yet it may be doubted whether Churchill would ever have become Prime Minister had it not been for Hitler. And if Churchill had not become Prime Minister, Hitler might have prevailed in imposing his evil tyranny on Europe. The great duel between them gave each a taste of victory and defeat, and in the end determined Europe's fate. Not every man writing in these times served in Churchill's regiment, met him during and after the war, commanded his regiment and played a part in the great man's funeral: or disputed the battlefield with Fuhrer's panzer and parachute troops, saw what Germany was like shortly after the war and sat in judgment at war criminal tribunals. General Strawson's portrait of these two men is thus of special interest and is written in a most entertaining style. Illustrated. 540 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). 1st Paperback Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Trade Paperback.
