The great duel between them gave each a taste of victory and defeat, and in the end determined Europe's fate. Not every man writing in these times served in Churchill's regiment, met him during and after the war, commanded his regiment and played a part in the great man's funeral: or disputed the battlefield with Fuhrer's panzer and parachute troops, saw what Germany was like shortly after the war and sat in judgment at war criminal tribunals. General Strawson's portrait of these two men is thus of special interest and is written in a most entertaining style.
