With his greatest successes a decade in the past, Cooper returned from Europe in 1833, settling first in New York City and finally in Cooperstown, New York, the town his father had founded half a century earlier. He was compelled to continue writing for income, and the present humble effort, published anonymously, was probably undertaken as much to put bread on the table as out of filial duty. But it is among Cooper's scarcest books and rarely found in such pleasing condition. N. B.
