About This Item
Heritage Press edition, with slipcase box, published 1958. The oldest intact Castilan epic poem. Based on the true story of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known as 'El Cid', the eleventh century knight and warlord. This is the English prose translation by Robert Sothey, Introduction by V.S. Pritchett. Illustrated by Rene ben Sussan, with 16 full page full color and 11 black and white drawings. 196 pages with Glossary. 8" X 11-1/2", sewn binding. Cloth covered cover boards with a Spanish inspired design, title imprinted in gold on the spine panel within a red panel. Includes the Heritage Press newsletter, 'Sandglass', which provides further information about the book and publication. Cover boards are flat, the corners are not bumped or creased. Spine panel is slightly sun faded. Edges of the text block are relatively clean, with one small smudge mark to the bottom edge. Dark red top-stain does not appear to be faded. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. This is not a remainder, not a library discard copy. The slipcase is intact, all corners are intact, there is a 1/2" closed tear on one of the edges of the opening, next to the tear is a spot where the top layer of the box covering has torn - a triangular area about 1/2" X 1/2". The attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
