About This Item
London: Sold by C. Hitch..., W. Johnston... & by W.H. Toms, [1742].. 12mo. Contemporary full calf, rebacked to style with raised bands, gilt rules to the compartments, elaborate ownership inscription by a Samuel Thomas of St. James's, Bristol to one of the versos of the title page dated 1767. Engraved title, dedication, 4 general maps and 42 county maps plus 7 tables. Marginal loss to one side of the title page, a number of the maps and tables with more minor splits at the centrefolds, mostly with subtle tissue repairs on the verso, the maps of Essex, Lincolnshire and Somerset with neat but more apparent repairs, very good overall. Chubb, CLXXIV. One of a number of issues of the first edition of the atlas published in this year, often with slightly different imprints. This example benefits from being one of the issues with the two added tables at the rear providing rates for "Hackney Coaches" and "Hackney Chairmen". The second edition appeared in 1745.
