About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton, 1978. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. The second novel by Kaplan is a Cold War spy-thriller featuring Steve Barth, a young American student caught in a deadly espionage operation between the Russian KGB and Israeli intelligence. Unaware of the game, Barth is asked to pick up some Hebrew texts from a London Israeli group and deliver them to jews in Moscow, the first step with serious consequences if he is discovered. First Edition, first printing (as stated, with complete numberline). Inscribed "Best Wishes" and signed by Kaplan on the half-title page. About 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, 220 pages in red paper-covered boards with white cloth backstrip and gold lettering on spine. Dj design by Alan Falk features author and title in white and blue against orange background on front panel with lower part of panel showing scrap of Hebrew script over a train photo. Back panel contains single blurb of praise from Clive Cussler. Text block edges show light foxing, o/w text and boards are clean, complete, unmarked with no noticeable flaws or damage. Not ex-library, not remaindered. Dj's front fold creased at both corners and both folds show narrow line of age-tanning on top edges. O/w dj shows only light rubbing and surface wear. No tears, no chipping. A collectable copy of a novel with many elements based on Kaplan's own experiences carrying Hebrew books to jews in Moscow and smuggling microfilm destined for Israeli intelligence on his way out. On his second trip, he was caught and interrogated for four days by the KGB before his release. Kaplan's first novel, "The Damascus Cover," was a best seller and the basis for a 2018 film starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and John Hurt.
