London: Charles Knight & Co, 1840. Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 12mo. A new edition, enlarged and revised, in which the History of English Intercourse is brought up to the present time. Half contemporary calf, orange faux lizard boards, burgundy cloth spine label. Orange textured endpapers. xii, 383 pp. Engraved illustrations in text. Calf is lightly rubbed, lightly faded to spine. Small damp stain to foot of front joint. Small chip to top edge of p. 215. Light soiling to edges of text block. A few sporadic dark spots, worst at p. 373. Light foxing to flyleaves, paper clip mark to top edge of ffep. Otherwise quite clean. John Francis Davis was the 2nd Governor of Hong Kong from 1844-1948, as well as the Chief Superintendent of British Trade in China from 1834-1835.
