Original Violet Cloth, Lettered In Gilt, With Additional Purple Lettering And Design. First Edition. A Worn But Solid Example Of An Important Book, Presenting The Author's Observations Of Slum Life In New York City, Following His 1890 Book On The Same Subject. Certainly No Comparable Books On 2023 Slum Life Anywhere, As The Total Situation Of The Population At The Bottom Of Wealth Measures Largely Slips Out Of Public Sight. Cloth With Light Wear, Frays Near Top And Bottom Of Spine And At Two Front Tips And For 1/2" Along Top Edge Of Front Board Adjacent To The Spine, Gilt Lettering Still Bright, Purple Lettering Strong Except Middle Two Letters Of Publisher's Name On Spine Are Weak. All Illustrations And Photographs Present, All Pages Solidly Attached, Binding And Hinges Are Solid. Previous Owner's Name (Margaret Billis Of Flushing, Long Island, Dated December1892) On Front Free Endpaper, No Other Names Or Marks, No Staining. Slums, With The Accompanying Loss Of Life, And Genetic Dead Ends, Are The Natural By-Product Of The Urban Manifestation Of Feudal Capitalism, Which Is Essentially A Marriage Agency For Those With Connections; The Slums Take The Losers. Slums Are The Clearest Proof That The Word "Culture" Has No Real Positive Meaning As A Social Characteristic, It Is Just A Word With No Clear Definite Manifestation In Reality.
