Indianapolis and Kansas City: Bowen-Merrill Company, 1897. 1897. THIS IS THE ACTUAL 1897 EDITION, NOT A FACSIMILE, PRINT-ON-DEMAND, OR A MORE RECENT COPY. Maroon hardcover, gilt lettering and decorations on binding, gilt on top edge, frontispiece with tissue overlay, 209 pages plus 12 pages of advertising for publishers' books at end. Condition of binding: corners lightly bumped, shelf-wear to top/foot of backstrip (spine), several discoloration spots. Endpapers: Old erased pencil notations (can lightly be seen), and several old lines drawn with pen and the year 1922 noted on first free endpaper. Overall, a few smudges/soiling scattered in text, edges lightly age toned, and Very Good. Free of cracked or torn binding, writing in text, and page tears. Not a former library book. Text is clear and readable. This wonderful antiquarian book features poems/prose including The Child-World, The Old Home Folks, At Noey's House, The Evening Company, Bud's Fairy-Tale, Cousin Rufus' Story, Uncle Mart's Poem, and many more. James Whitcomb Riley was known as the Hoosier Poet and Children's Poet for his dialect works and his children's poetry. Some have referred to him as The Poet of the Common People. He was born in Greenfield Indiana on October 7, 1849. This is a lovely, book of poetry, published one year after the first edition. Collectible.
