Green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. xx, 188pp. Extensive illustrations (one 48" foldout), line drawings, map endpapers. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear, more so at head and tail of spine. A handsome, tight and lovely first edition, bearing a choice presentation inscription and signature in blue ballpoint on title page: "To: William J. Petersen / Best wishes / Charles T. Knudsen / Sept. 6, 1965." William J. "Steamboat Bill" Peterson (1901-89) was the dean of Mississippi River historians, author of the highly-regarded classic river commerce history "Steamboating on the Upper Mississippi" (1937) and many other Iowa and Mississippi River histories.
