Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's dark blue cloth with white lettering t spine with color pictorial cover in original pictorial jacket. (Lusis: 2556) First edition. A E J Mackett-Beeson traces the history of the game, and describes the few pieces which have survived from the medieval period. Then he considers the contribution of different countries, Europe, Russian and the Middle East. And finally he surveys the wide variety of attractive and individual sets made in the Far East.
