vii+246 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/4") bound in original black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and blind stamped pictorial chess board to front cover. Signed by Capablanca. (Betts:11-24) First edition.

Published shortly after he had won the World's Chess Championship. Reprinted 1922, 1923, 1926, 1931, 1937, 1941, 1942, 1945, 1946, 1948 and reset edition published in 1951. A knowledge of the elements is assumed. A graded course of instruction, with a general first chapter, the subjects of which are re-examined in more detail in succeeding chapters. Part two comprises 14 games played by Capablanca, with annotations, including notes on the openings.

José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera was a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. One of the greatest players of all time, he was renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. Due to his achievements in the chess world, mastery over the board and his relatively simple style of play he was nicknamed the "Human Chess Machine". He is widely regarded as the most naturally talented chess player in history.

Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament, draws were counted as a half point. In the second half, they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds, 8 replay rounds, and 4 game playoff for first at the end, there were 50 rounds all told (!). Like the 4th Congress, this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time (though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891), giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion. In 1872 John Watkinson started a chess column in the Huddersfield College Magazine. Eventually the single page column became a small magazine exclusively devoted to chess - The Huddersfield College Chess Magazine. Finally this magazine evolved into the British Chess Magazine which is still going strong today. The columns provide an interesting glimpse of the local Huddersfield & Yorkshire chess scene at the time before eventually becoming more nationally and internationally oriented in later years. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5394) First edition.The chess club in Hannover, Germany celebrated its fifty year anniversary by organizing a small, international chess master tournament in 1926. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grunfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Samisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. Contains Sir William Jones' poem "Cassia: or The Game of Chess, A Poem"; based upon Pratt's "Studies of Chess". (Van der Linde: 613) 5th English edition.This was first published in London by Ogilvie in 1802 (2 volumes). First published in America in 1817 and reprinted in 1824. The name of the compiler has never been established. The miscellaneous collection of anecdotes, essays and poems at the end is not without interest. The openings and games are all in the numerical notation and no diagrams are given. Among the participants were veterans like Jacques Mieses and Georg Marco, and established masters like Alexander Alekhine, Akiba Rubinstein, and Savielly Tartakower. Max Euwe, an amateur, participated by virtue of having become the new Dutch champion earlier in the year. The event was another victory for Alekhine, who would go on to dominate tournaments and the elite for decades to come, most as world champion. The Danish Chess Championship was organized by the Danish Chess Union (DSU) and first held in 1910. A masterclass was first introduced in 1915. But it is only from 1922 that the title of Danish chess champion was introduced, this was the first year also players from Copenhagen joined. The Master Class for 1916 was contested by 8 players. It was won b P F Johner with a score of 5 and tied two through 4 by M Marchand, O. von Lowenborg and H Krause. 5th place was claimed by O Sevensson with 3 points. 6th place was a tie between Johs Giersing and G Nyholm. The last place was regulated to E Jacobson with 1 1/2.

The tournament consisted of ten contestants. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grünfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Sämisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.
