About This Item

Np (Poughkeepsie, NY?), 1882. Pamphlet. Very good overall. In 1861, when Vassar was chartered, Lossing was appointed to the body corporate until his death in 1891. Lossing was a Dutchess County, NY native and became a prominent engraver, illustrator, and historian. He was a part owner and editor of the Poughkeepsie Telegraph. He authored over 40 books, most notably "The Hudson, From the Wilderness to the Sea" first published in 1862, which continues to be a key book on the Hudson River.

Lge 12mo pamphlet, 21 pp. Maroon paper wrappers with gilt type (oxidized), slightly rubbed on edges, back page has embossed stamp for the Lindmark's Book Shop, Poughkeepsie, NY. Envelope, 5 x 7.5", with Poughkeepsie, NY cancellation mark. Envelope with the phrase "Charter of Vassar College, Will of the Founder" at top, presumably in Lossing's hand. OCLC: 38023005.
