THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED TO CRAWHALL FROM THE PUBLISHER: "JOSEPH CRAWHALL / WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF THE PUBLISHER / FIELD & TUER 26/10/83." On the verso of the title page is the Limited Edition statement: As the illustrations herein are all hand colored the issue is necessarily limited - Joseph Crawhall". The book contains 8 chapbooks, each approximately 30 pages, with separate covers and pagination and printed on various colored rough textured papers. Illustrated by Crawhall with his wonderful and characteristic boldly outlined woodcuts, hand colored. It includes: The Babes in the Wood, Jemmy & Nancy of Yarmouth, I Know What I Know, Blew-cap for Me, John & Joan, George Barnewel, The Barkshire Lady's Garland and The Taming of the Shrew. Crawhall was born in Newcastle in 1821 and wrote and/or illustrated 17 books before he died in London in 1896. House: Dict. of 19th Century Illustrators notes: "Crawhall enjoyed the spirit of book making and began to assemble material from various sources, writing, illustrating and putting the book together himself. ... Crawhall attempted to bring back the personality to books, dead since industrialisation".
