About This Item
Orono, Maine: University of Maine Press, 2004. First. Softbound. VG, front cover curls up a bit. Color illustrated wraps, [xix], 414pp, 47 BW illustrations. The Irish came to Maine with courage and hope. Their story is as exciting and varied as that of the state of Maine itself, but it is woefully underchronicled and, therefore, largely unknown. They Change Their Sky: The Irish in Maine represents an attempt to address this historical omission. . . . The ten essays that make up this book are examples of the type of scholarship that will serve to fill the gaps in our knowledge of the history of the Irish in Maine. This collection is by no means exhaustive, nor was it intended to be. It is, however, representative and diverse. Each writer has brought her or his expertise and curiosity to this project. In addition, diverse regions of Maine are represented, from Portland in the south to Benedicta and Aroostook County in the north. - from the editor's introduction.
